Cyprus University of Technology: The Language Centre collaborated with the Utrecht University of the Netherlands on the intercultural educational programme "Virtual Exchange through VR"
The Special Teaching Staff of the Language Centre, Ms. Maria Christoforou, had the opportunity to collaborate with Utrecht University of the Netherlands and the distinguished researcher Kristi Jauregi-Ondarra in the intercultural educational programme "Virtual Exchange through VR" and the course "English for Chemistry Engineers »(English for Chemical Engineering). In this project also participated the Head of the innovation centre of CUT "CUTing Edge -American Space", Special Educational Staff of the Language Centre Mr. Dimitris Boglou.
The uniqueness of the project focuses on the fact that higher education students came together, met and became acquainted with the culture and way of life in everyday life and as students (academic life) through Virtual Reality (VR) as an innovative tool, and specifically through the application Altspace.
All the meetings and tasks in which the students worked were done through Virtual Reality, and specifically through Oculus Quest and Oculus Quest 2.
The teaching and practice of English as a foreign language certainly surpassed the static one, as the students were able to simulate authentic language practice conditions and see the way of life of their partners in a three-dimensional space. The students also designed their own avatars which looked like the students actually are.
Through this project, data was collected and the results of the collaboration will be presented at the EuroCALL 2022 conference in August, as well as at other research events.
This project proves once again how innovative the Cyprus University of Technology is in pedagogical teaching methods, cooperation with other international universities and technology, since the tool of Virtual Reality was used exclusively, which is difficult and with great challenges.

Τεχνολογικό Πανεπιστήμιο Κύπρου: Το Κέντρο Γλωσσών συνεργάστηκε με το Utrecht University της Ολλανδίας για το διαπολιτισμικό εκπαιδευτικό πρόγραμμα «Virtual Exchange through VR»
Το Ειδικό Εκπαιδευτικό Προσωπικό του Κέντρου Γλωσσών, κα Μαρία Χριστοφόρου, είχε την ευκαιρία να συνεργαστεί με το Utrecht University της Ολλανδίας και τη διακεκριμένη ερευνήτρια Kristi Jauregi-Ondarra στο πλαίσιο του διαπολιτισμικού εκπαιδευτικού προγράμματος «Virtual Exchange through VR» και του μαθήματος «Αγγλικά για Χημικούς Μηχανικούς» (English for Chemical Engineering). Στο εν λόγω project συμμετείχε και ο Υπεύθυνος του κέντρου καινοτομίας του ΤΕΠΑΚ «CUTing Edge -American Space», Ειδικό Εκπαιδευτικό Προσωπικό του Κέντρου Γλωσσών κ. Δημήτρης Μπόγλου.
Η μοναδικότητα του project εστιάζει στο γεγονός ότι οι φοιτητές τριτοβάθμιας εκπαίδευσης ήρθαν κοντά, γνωρίστηκαν και εξοικειώθηκαν με τη κουλτούρα και τον τρόπο ζωής στη καθημερινότητα και ως φοιτητές (ακαδημαϊκή ζωή) μέσω του Virtual Reality (VR) ως καινοτόμο εργαλείο, και συγκεκριμένα μέσω της εφαρμογής Altspace.
Όλες οι συναντήσεις και τα tasks στα οποία εργάστηκαν οι φοιτητές έγιναν μέσω του Virtual Reality, και συγκεκριμένα μέσω του Oculus Quest και Oculus Quest 2.
Η διδασκαλία και η πρακτική των Αγγλικών ως ξένη γλώσσα σίγουρα ξεπέρασε τη στατικότητα, αφού μπόρεσαν οι φοιτητές να κάνουν προσομοίωση αυθεντικών συνθηκών πρακτικής της γλώσσας και να δουν τον τρόπο ζωής των εταίρων τους σε τρισδιάστατο χώρο. Οι φοιτητές επίσης σχεδίασαν τα δικά τους avatars τα οποία έμοιαζαν όπως είναι οι φοιτητές στην πραγματικότητα.
Μέσω αυτού του project, έγινε συλλογή δεδομένων και τα αποτελέσματα της συνεργασίας θα παρουσιαστούν στο συνέδριο EuroCALL 2022 τον Αύγουστο, καθώς και σε άλλα ερευνητικά events.
Το συγκεκριμένο project αποδεικνύει για ακόμα μια φορά πόσο καινοτόμο είναι το Τεχνολογικό Πανεπιστήμιο Κύπρου σε παιδαγωγικές μεθόδους διδασκαλίας, συνεργασίας με άλλα διεθνή πανεπιστήμια αλλά και σε θέματα τεχνολογίας, αφού χρησιμοποιήθηκε αποκλειστικά το εργαλείο της Εικονικής Πραγματικότητας, κάτι που είναι δύσκολο και με μεγάλες προκλήσεις.
