Rural Pact: European momentum to support the EU’s rural areas

On 15-16 June, over 450 participants representing EU, national, and regional policy makers along with local authorities, social and economic stakeholders gathered for the first Rural Pact conference. They agreed on the governance of a Rural Pact and committed to achieving the long-term vision for the EU’s rural areas. Over these two days, participants and members of the Rural Pact community started making commitments to make the EU’s rural areas stronger, more connected, resilient and prosperous by 2040.

COST Connect on the New European Bauhaus Initiative

On Thursday 09 and Friday 10 June, a new COST Connect conference took place bringing together experts and stakeholders from various fields across culture, environment, and economy to exchange on the crucial topic of achieving sustainability through cross-collaborations. With 15 COST Actions participating to present their case examples, this COST Connect took place as a side event of the Festival of the New European Bauhaus Initiative in Brussels, sparking inspiring and fruitful exchanges to build sustainable societies.

In focus: Engaging with energy partners in a changing world

Soaring energy prices since last autumn, followed by Russia’s unjustified aggression on Ukraine, have put the European energy market to a test. If the ambitious objectives of the European Green Deal were to be maintained, Europe needed a plan to manage tight global energy supply, rising inflation and insecurities that accompany a military conflict within close proximity. Above all, shedding the dependence on Russian energy imports has become a top priority.

Commission kick starts work with EU national authorities to speed up permit-granting procedures for renewable energy projects

On 14 June, a multi-country flagship workshop on permit-granting processes for renewable energy projects took place. The aim of the workshop was to discuss the options that Member States have in order to accelerate the permitting process, gathering the experience and good practices that have been identified at the Member State level.
