Frederick University: Frederick University is established as a full member of "European University: EU-CONEXUS"

An important step for Cyprus to have a say and a role in the initiative of European Universities was achieved during the work of the EU-CONEXUS consortium, in which the Rector of Frederick University, Professor George Demosthenous participated as a member of the Supreme Executive Council of the consortium. The work took place in the French city of La Rochelle where the Rector participated in the dialogue on the future and continuation of the consortium, which focuses on training and research for the intelligent sustainable management of urban coastal areas.

In his speech, Prof. Demosthenes referred to the objectives of EU-CONEXUS and the alignment of Frederick University with them, noting his contribution to the Governing Board, the Academic Council, the Research Council, the Management Board Council and other EU-CONEXUS working groups.

During his speech, the Rector proposed a new initiative, which was enthusiastically accepted by the partners and further strengthened the University's position in the EU-CONEXUS consortium. As he explained: "EU-CONEXUS Arts: Towards a new model of Sustainable Development through Art is a new initiative that seeks to involve people from different backgrounds in the creative process, to reach out to the community as a whole and to encourage collaboration between creative people beyond imaginary and physical separations. The EU-CONEXUSArts initiative will be coordinated by Professor Giannis Toumazis, who was recently invited by the Office of the President of the European Parliament, Ms. Ursula von der Leyen, to participate as an expert in the New Bauhaus formation team. The EU-CONEXUS Arts initiative strengthens the scope of research conducted at the University on the issues of intelligent, sustainable urban coastal management. The Nature Conservation Unit, the Urban Planning and Development Research Team, the Sustainable Energy Research Group and the University's Department of Shipping and Commerce are already contributing in this direction. "We are constantly strengthening our cooperation with the EU-CONEXUS consortium at every level, offering our know-how in areas such as urban planning, shipping and trade, environment, sustainable energy, etc.

In addition, as a member of the Solution Network for Sustainable Development (SDSN) and a founding member of the Cypriot section of the Network, the University offers us its knowledge and useful links with experts, to further strengthen the effort to achieve the Goals in the context of of EU-CONEXUS. We also share our innovative teaching methods, both for conventional and distance learning programs as well as internship programs. The exchange of knowledge and good practices is extremely useful for all the Universities participating in this consortium, which was among the first 17 "European Universities" selected for funding by the European Commission. "

Following the Rector's intervention in La Rochelle, Frederick University is considered by partners as one of the key players in the consortium. It will therefore make a decisive contribution to the preparation of the new proposal to be submitted to the Commission next March, for the continuation of the consortium for another four years. The partners express their confidence in its approval and the participation of the University as a full member of the consortium. "We look forward to our further contribution to this transnational university cooperation and work to further deepen our relations. In consultation with the President of the Consortium, Rector of LaRochelle University, and the ProjectManager of EU-CONEXUS, we will soon have an online meeting with the participation of all colleagues involved in the various bodies of the consortium, to determine the steps of integration Of our Departments and Services in the operation of the consortium, so that our participation and contribution is even more substantial and productive, with mutual benefits towards the realization of the vision of EU-CONEXUS. "

The EU-CONEXUS transnational university cooperation, which focuses on the intelligent sustainable management of the urban coastal zone, involves six partner universities: La Rochelle Université (France), the Agricultural University of Athens (Greece), the Technical University of Civil Engineering Bucharest ), Klaipeda University (Lithuania), Universidad Católica de Valencia “San Vicente Mártir” (Spain) and the University of Zadar (Croatia) and three partner partners: Frederick University (Cyprus), Waterford Institute of Technology (Ireland) and the University of Rostock (Germany).

Πανεπιστήμιο Frederick: Το Πανεπιστήμιο Frederick εδραιώνεται ως πλήρες μέλος του «Ευρωπαϊκού Πανεπιστημίου: EU-CONEXUS»

Ένα σημαντικό βήμα για την Κύπρο ώστε να έχει λόγο και ρόλο στην πρωτοβουλία των Ευρωπαϊκών Πανεπιστημίων επιτεύχθηκε κατά τις εργασίες της κοινοπραξίας EU-CONEXUS, στις οποίες συμμετείχε ο Πρύτανης του Πανεπιστημίου Frederick, Καθηγητής Γιώργος Δημοσθένους ως μέλος του Ανώτατου Εκτελεστικού Συμβουλίου της κοινοπραξίας. Οι εργασίες πραγματοποιήθηκαν στη Γαλλική πόλη La Rochelle όπου ο Πρύτανης συμμετείχε στον διάλογο για το μέλλον και τη συνέχιση της κοινοπραξίας, η οποία επικεντρώνεται στην εκπαίδευση και την έρευνα για την ευφυή αειφόρο διαχείριση αστικών παράκτιων ζωνών.

Στην παρέμβασή του, ο Καθ. Δημοσθένους αναφέρθηκε στους στόχους του EU-CONEXUS και στην ευθυγράμμιση του Πανεπιστημίου Frederick μ’ αυτούς, επισημαίνοντας τη μέχρι τώρα συμβολή του στο Ανώτατο Εκτελεστικό Συμβούλιο (Governing Board), στο Ακαδημαϊκό Συμβούλιο, στο Συμβούλιο Έρευνας, στο Διαχειριστικό Συμβούλιο καθώς και σε άλλες ομάδες εργασίας του EU-CONEXUS.

Κατά την παρέμβασή του, ο Πρύτανης εισηγήθηκε μια καινούρια πρωτοβουλία, η οποία έγινε δεκτή με ενθουσιασμό από τους εταίρους και ενδυνάμωσε ακόμη περισσότερο τη θέση του Πανεπιστημίου στην κοινοπραξία του EU-CONEXUS. Όπως ο ίδιος εξήγησε: «Το EU-CONEXUS Arts: Προς ένα νέο μοντέλο Βιώσιμης Ανάπτυξης μέσω της Τέχνης είναι μια νέα πρωτοβουλία η οποία επιδιώκει να εμπλέξει άτομα από διαφορετικά υπόβαθρα στη δημιουργική διαδικασία, να προσεγγίσει την κοινότητα ως σύνολο και να ενθαρρύνει τη συνεργασία μεταξύ δημιουργικών ανθρώπων πέρα από νοητούς και φυσικούς διαχωρισμούς. Τον συντονισμό της πρωτοβουλίας EU-CONEXUSArts θα αναλάβει ο Καθηγητής Γιάννης Τουμαζής, ο οποίος πρόσφατα προσκλήθηκε από το Γραφείο της Προέδρου του Ευρωπαϊκού Κοινοβουλίου, κας Ούρσουλα φον ντερ Λάιεν να συμμετάσχει ως ειδικός στην ομάδα διαμόρφωσης του Νέου Ευρωπαϊκού Μπαουχάους.». Η πρωτοβουλία EU-CONEXUS Arts ενισχύει το εύρος της έρευνας που διεξάγεται στο Πανεπιστήμιο για τα θέματα ευφυούς, αειφόρου διαχείρισης των αστικών παράκτιων ζωνών. Ήδη συμβάλλουν προς αυτή την κατεύθυνση η Μονάδα Διατήρησης της Φύσης, η Ερευνητική Ομάδα Πολεοδομικού Σχεδιασμού και Ανάπτυξης, η Ερευνητική Ομάδα για την Αειφόρο Ενέργεια και το Τμήμα Ναυτιλίας και Εμπορίου του Πανεπιστημίου. «Ενισχύουμε ολοένα τη συνεργασία μας με την κοινοπραξία EU-CONEXUS σε κάθε επίπεδο, προσφέροντας την τεχνογνωσία μας σε τομείς όπως ο πολεοδομικός σχεδιασμός, η ναυτιλία και το εμπόριο, το περιβάλλον, η αειφόρος ενέργεια κ.ά. Επιπλέον, ως μέλος του Δικτύου Λύσεων για τη Βιώσιμη Ανάπτυξη (SDSN) και ιδρυτικό μέλος του κυπριακού τμήματος του Δικτύου, το Πανεπιστήμιο μας προσφέρει τις γνώσεις και τις χρήσιμες διασυνδέσεις του με ειδικούς, για την περαιτέρω ενίσχυση της προσπάθειας προς την επίτευξη των Στόχων στο πλαίσιο του EU-CONEXUS. Ακόμη, μοιραζόμαστε τις καινοτόμες μεθόδους διδασκαλίας μας, τόσο για τα συμβατικά και εξ αποστάσεως προγράμματα αλλά και τα προγράμματα πρακτικής άσκησης. Η ανταλλαγή γνώσης και καλών πρακτικών είναι εξαιρετικά χρήσιμη για όλα τα Πανεπιστήμια που συμμετέχουν σε αυτή την κοινοπραξία, η οποία υπήρξε ανάμεσα στα πρώτα 17 “Ευρωπαϊκά Πανεπιστήμια” που επιλέχθηκαν για χρηματοδότηση από την Ευρωπαϊκή Επιτροπή.»

Μετά την παρέμβαση του Πρύτανη στο La Rochelle, το Πανεπιστήμιο Frederick αξιολογείται από τους εταίρους ως ένας από τους κεντρικούς πρωταγωνιστές στην κοινοπραξία. Για αυτό το λόγο θα έχει καθοριστική συμβολή στην ετοιμασία της της νέας πρότασης που θα υποβληθεί τον ερχόμενο Μάρτιο στην Κομισιόν, για τη συνέχιση της κοινοπραξίας για τέσσερα ακόμη χρόνια. Οι εταίροι εκφράζουν τη βεβαιότητα τους για την έγκρισή της και για τη συμμετοχή του Πανεπιστημίου ως πλήρες μέλος της κοινοπραξίας. «Προσβλέπουμε στην περαιτέρω συνεισφορά μας σε αυτή τη διακρατική πανεπιστημιακή συνεργασία και εργαζόμαστε για την περαιτέρω εμβάθυνση των σχέσεών μας. Σε συνεννόηση με τον Πρόεδρο της Κοινοπραξίας, Πρύτανη του Πανεπιστημίου La Rochelle, και την Project Manager του EU-CONEXUS, θα έχουμε το επόμενο διάστημα διαδικτυακή συνάντηση με τη συμμετοχή όλων των συναδέλφων που συμμετέχουν στα διάφορα όργανα της κοινοπραξίας, για να καθορίσουμε τα βήματα της ενσωμάτωσης των Τμημάτων και Υπηρεσιών μας στη λειτουργία της κοινοπραξίας, έτσι ώστε η συμμετοχή και η συνεισφορά μας να είναι ακόμα πιο ουσιαστική και παραγωγική, με αμοιβαία οφέλη προς την πραγματοποίηση του οράματος του EU-CONEXUS.»

Στη διακρατική πανεπιστημιακή συνεργασία EU-CONEXUS, που επικεντρώνεται στην ευφυή αειφόρο διαχείριση της αστικής παράκτιας ζώνης, συμμετέχουν έξι πανεπιστήμια-εταίροι: το La Rochelle Université (Γαλλία), το Γεωπονικό Πανεπιστήμιο Αθηνών (Ελλάδα), το Technical University of Civil Engineering Bucharest (Ρουμανία), το Klaipeda University (Λιθουανία), το Universidad Católica de Valencia “San Vicente Mártir” (Ισπανία) και το University of Zadar (Κροατία) και τρεις συνεργαζόμενοι εταίροι: το Πανεπιστήμιο Frederick (Κύπρος), το Waterford Institute of Technology (Ιρλανδία) και το University of Rostock (Γερμανία).
