University of Cyprus: International distinction for academic professor of University of Cyprus

A research article by Dr. Michalis Michaelidis, of the Department of Psychology, was awarded the Richard M. Wolf Memorial Award for outstanding paper by the International Association for the Evaluation of Education achievement (IEA).

An important distinction was announced by International Association for the Evaluation of

Educational Achievement (IEA). Awarded the research paper IEA Richard M. Wolf Memorial Award for high quality empirical research in Dr. Michalis Michailidis, Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychology of the University Of Cyprus. This award concerns the article titled “Negative keying effects in the factor structure of TIMSS 2011 motivation scales and associations with reading achievement ” which was published in the prestigious journal Applied Measurement in Education.

The IEA is known for its international large-scale surveys conducted in the field of education such as TIMSS, PIRLS, ICCS, and ICILS. In these comparative studies various aspects of education systems are considered worldwide; in some of them Cyprus often participates. During this year's General Assembly of the IEA on October 25 2021, the winners of this year's research awards of the Organization have been announced.

The contribution of Dr. Michailidis was distinguished among a large number of published works. In the research he conducted, he used large samples of students from various European countries who participated in the TIMSS and PIRLS research and combined performance in essays with measurements for different dimensions of motivation with special attention to methodological data from IEA investigations.

The first important goal of this research is methodological: during the TIMSS research, performance tests are given to fourth grade primary school children, as well as questionnaires for various characteristics and perceptions of children. Focusing on motivational metrics, the article explores the psychometric properties of scales that measure students' satisfaction, involvement and self-esteem in the Mathematics lesson. It then identifies the difficulty that arises when negatively worded questions are used in questionnaires. With data from six different languages, it shows that the difficulty for this population is related to the level of language comprehension as measured by another IEA survey, PIRLS. Fourth graders with lower language performance answer differently if a question presented in a questionnaire with a negative rather than a positive wording. Therefore, the scores that ultimately result from the incentive scales end up underestimating the characteristics measured for these children, in contrast to the grades of children with higher language performance.

Πανεπιστήμιο Κύπρου: Διεθνής Διάκριση για ακαδημαϊκό του Πανεπιστημίου Κύπρου

Ερευνητικό άρθρο του Δρ. Μιχάλη Μιχαηλίδη του Τμήματος Ψυχολογίας βραβεύτηκε από τον Διεθνή Οργανισμό για την Αξιολόγηση της Εκπαιδευτικής Επίδοσης (IEA) με το βραβείο Richard M. Wolf Memorial Award for outstanding paper.

Μια σημαντική διάκριση ανακοινώθηκε από τον Διεθνή Οργανισμό για την Αξιολόγηση της Εκπαιδευτικής Επίδοσης (International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement, ΙΕΑ). Απένειμε το ερευνητικό βραβείο IEA Richard M. Wolf Memorial Award για υψηλής ποιότητας εμπειρική έρευνα στον Δρα Μιχάλη Μιχαηλίδη, Επίκουρο Καθηγητή στο Τμήμα Ψυχολογίας του Πανεπιστημίου Κύπρου. Η βράβευση αυτή αφορά στο άρθρο με τίτλο “Negative keying effects in the factor structure of TIMSS 2011 motivation scales and associations with reading achievement” που δημοσιεύτηκε στο έγκριτο περιοδικό Applied Measurement in Education.

Ο οργανισμός ΙΕΑ είναι γνωστός για τις διεθνείς έρευνες μεγάλης κλίμακας που διεξάγει στο χώρο της εκπαίδευσης, όπως η TIMSS, PIRLS, ICCS, και ICILS. Στις συγκριτικές αυτές έρευνες εξετάζονται διάφορες πτυχές των εκπαιδευτικών συστημάτων παγκόσμια · σε κάποιες από αυτές συμμετέχει συχνά και η Κύπρος. Κατά τη φετινή Γενική Συνέλευση του ΙΕΑ στις 25 Οκτωβρίου 2021, ανακοινώθηκαν οι νικητές των φετινών ερευνητικών βραβείων του Οργανισμού (https://www.iea.nl/news-events/news/iea-research-award-winners-2021).

Η συνεισφορά του Δρ. Μιχαηλίδη διακρίθηκε ανάμεσα σε μεγάλο αριθμό δημοσιευμένων εργασιών. Στην έρευνα που διεξήγαγε, χρησιμοποίησε μεγάλα δείγματα μαθητών από διάφορες ευρωπαϊκές χώρες που συμμετείχαν στην έρευνα TIMSS και PIRLS και συνδύασε επιδόσεις στα δοκίμια με μετρήσεις για διάφορες διαστάσεις κινήτρων με ιδιαίτερη προσοχή σε μεθοδολογικά στοιχεία των ερευνών του ΙΕΑ.

Ο πρώτος σημαντικός στόχος του συγκεκριμένης έρευνας είναι μεθοδολογικός: κατά την έρευνα TIMSS χορηγούνται σε παιδιά 4ης τάξης Δημοτικού Σχολείου δοκίμια επίδοσης, καθώς και ερωτηματολόγια για διάφορα χαρακτηριστικά και αντιλήψεις των παιδιών. Εστιάζοντας στις μετρήσεις για τα κίνητρα, το άρθρο διερευνά τις ψυχομετρικές ιδιότητες των κλιμάκων που μετρούν την ευχαρίστηση, την εμπλοκή και την αυτοεκτίμηση των μαθητών στο μάθημα των Μαθηματικών. Ακολούθως εντοπίζει τη δυσκολία που προκύπτει όταν στα ερωτηματολόγια χρησιμοποιούνται ερωτήσεις με αρνητική διατύπωση. Με δεδομένα από έξι διαφορετικές γλώσσες, δείχνει ότι η δυσκολία για το συγκεκριμένο πληθυσμό σχετίζεται με το επίπεδο γλωσσικής κατανόησης όπως αυτό μετριέται από μια άλλη έρευνα του ΙΕΑ, την PIRLS. Παιδιά 4ης τάξης με χαμηλότερη γλωσσική επίδοση απαντούν διαφοροποιημένα αν μια ερώτηση παρουσιαστεί σε ένα ερωτηματολόγιο με αρνητική παρά με θετική διατύπωση. Συνεπώς, οι βαθμοί που τελικά προκύπτουν από τις κλίμακες κινήτρων καταλήγουν να υποεκτιμούν τα χαρακτηριστικά που μετρούνται για τα παιδιά αυτά, σε αντίθεση με τους βαθμούς παιδιών με ψηλότερη γλωσσική επίδοση.
