The European Cinema Night 2021: five days of free screenings connecting citizens across Europe

Creative Europe MEDIA – the EU programme supporting the European audiovisual sector – is organising the fourth edition of the outreach event entitled ‘European Cinema Night – Sharing stories we love’.

This initiative aims at bringing Europe closer to its citizens while celebrating together the richness of the European film culture.

The free screenings of European films supported by MEDIA will connect more than 14,500 cinemagoers in numerous cities across Europe, strengthening personal connections around a shared European identity built on diversity. This initiative and, subsequently, participating cinemas, has considerably grown throughout the years. It first counted with 34 theatres in 2018, then gathered 54 in 2019 and 67 in 2020 having reached 80 venues this year.

Each of them has selected the film to be screened according to the interest of their public, in order to better adapt to a diversity of audiences. The local venues are all renowned cinemas belonging to the Europa Cinemas network, co-organiser of the event. Some of the screenings will be complemented with activities such as introductions, Q&A with directors, actors or other members of the film crew and debates, in which the audience will have the opportunity to discuss the film with other film-lovers.

Among the screened titles, there is Druk (Another Round), by Thomas Vinterberg, awarded with the Oscar for Best International Feature Film in this year’s edition of the Academy Awards, and Corpus Christi, by Jan Komasa, which was competing in this year’s edition of the LUX Award and received the Europa Cinemas label in 2019.
