Three academics of the Open University of Cyprus among the top highly cited scientists in the world in their respective scientific fields

Three (3) Faculty members of the Open University of Cyprus (OUC) have been recognized among the world’s top scientists in their respective scientific fields in the updated (on August 2021) study entitled “Updated science-wide author databases of standardized citation indicators” published by a research team of the Elsevier publishing house and the Stanford University (USA).

The updated ranking list, published on October 2021, includes -for the second consecutive year- the following three (3) academics of the Open University of Cyprus:

• Professor Michalinos Zembylas, Educational Theory and Curriculum Studies, OUC MA Programme in “Educational Sciences”, 17th in 2020, 30th among 70.063 scientists in the field of education throughout his career.
• Professor Yannis Manolopoulos, Data Management, Vice-Rector of the Open University of Cyprus, 3066th among 253.359 scientists in the field of Artificial Intelligence referring to all years analyzed.
• Associate Professor Antonis Zorpas, Chemical Engineering / Environmental Engineering, OUC MSc Programme in “Environmental Conservation and Management”, head of the OUC Lab of Chemical Engineering and Engineering Sustainability, 357th based on the 2020 publications, 699th among 77.304 scientists in the field of Environmental Sciences throughout his career.

The study retrieves data from the SCOPUS database, and using a range of parameters for each scientist's research contribution and influence, compiles, as indicated by the authors of the ranking “a publicly available database of over 100.000 top-scientists from all scientific subjects (as well as those ranked in the top 2% in their main subfield discipline) that provides standardized information on citations, h-index, co-authorship adjusted hm-index, citations to papers in different authorship positions and a composite indicator”. Scientists are classified into 22 scientific fields and 176 sub-fields. Field- and subfield-specific percentiles are also provided for all scientists who have published at least 5 papers.
