University of Cyprus: Visit of the Chief Executive of the EU Defence Agency at the Center of Excellence “KIOS” of the University of Cyprus. The role of research and innovation in climate issues was discussed.
Visit to the Center of Excellence for Research and Innovation “KIOS” (Research and Innovation Center of Excellence) of the University of Cyprus, was held by the Chief Executive of the European Defence Agency (EDA), Mr. Jiří Šedivý, on Monday, 11 October 2021.
His visit was part of his contacts in Cyprus with officials of the Ministry of Defence and with representatives of Cypriot companies, Research Centers and Institutions participating in EDA programmes and the European Defence Industrial Development Programme - EDIDP.
Mr Jiří Šedivý was accompanied by Mr Maxime Roclore on behalf of the EEA and Mrs. Elisabeth Schoeffmann and, on behalf of the Ministry of Defence of Cyprus, Chief of the National Guard, Lieutenant General Demokritos Zervakis, the Adjutant General, the Diplomatic Advisor to the Minister of Defence, Mr Andreas Eliades and Representative of the Republic of Cyprus to the EDA, Mr. Vasilis Hadjimichael.
The meeting was also attended by the Rector of the University of Cyprus, Professor Tasos Christofides, the Deputy Director of the Center of Excellence Professor Christos Panagiotou, Deputy Director of the Center of Excellence "KIOS", as well as other members of the academic and research staff of "KIOS" Center.
During the meeting, issues related to the policy defence and security of critical infrastructure as well as the role of research and and innovation in addressing and improving the impacts of climate change at local and regional level. Particular reference was made to research programmes, work groups and actions of the European Research Area, projects and activities of the Defence Agency, in which the "KIOS" Center of Excellence and the University of Cyprus are actively involved.
The attendees also had the opportunity to tour the facilities and the laboratory of the "KIOS" Center of Excellence and had the opportunity to talk to young researchers about the pioneering research and innovation carried out at the Centre, on intelligent critical infrastructure systems, such as energy, transport, water resources and management systems emergency response systems. During short presentations, the researchers of the "KIOS" Center demonstrated how research and development of cutting-edge technologies can transform critical infrastructure systems into smarter, more efficient ones, green and safe, to address the impacts of climate change.

Πανεπιστήμιο Κύπρου: Επίσκεψη του Εκτελεστικού Διευθυντή του Ευρωπαϊκού Οργανισμού Άμυνας στο Κέντρο Αριστείας «Κοίος» του Πανεπιστημίου Κύπρου. Συζητήθηκε ο ρόλος της έρευνας και καινοτομίας στα θέματα της κλιματικής αλλαγής.
Επίσκεψη στο Κέντρο Αριστείας για Έρευνα και Καινοτομία «Κοίος του Πανεπιστημίου Κύπρου, πραγματοποίησε ο Εκτελεστικός Διευθυντής του Ευρωπαϊκού Οργανισμού Άμυνας (ΕΟΑ), κ. Jiří Šedivý, τη Δευτέρα, 11 Οκτωβρίου 2021.
Η επίσκεψη του εντάχθηκε στο πλαίσιο επαφών του στην Κύπρο με αξιωματούχους του Υπουργείου Άμυνας και με εκπροσώπους κυπριακών εταιρειών, Ερευνητικών Κέντρων και Ιδρυμάτων που συμμετέχουν σε προγράμματα του ΕΟΑ και του Ευρωπαϊκού Προγράμματος Βιομηχανικής Ανάπτυξης στον Τομέα της Άμυνας (European Defence Industrial Development Programme - EDIDP).
Τον κ. Jiří Šedivý συνόδευαν, εκ μέρους του ΕΟΑ, ο κ. Maxime Roclore και η κα Elisabeth Schoeffmann και εκ μέρους του Υπουργείου Άμυνας της Κύπρου, o Αρχηγός της Εθνικής Φρουράς, Αντιστράτηγος Δημόκριτος Ζερβάκης, o Υπασπιστής Αρχηγού, o Διπλωματικός Σύμβουλος Υπουργού Άμυνας, κ. Αντρέας Ηλιάδης και ο Αντιπρόσωπος της Κυπριακής Δημοκρατίας στον ΕΟΑ, κ. Bασίλης Χατζημιχαήλ. Στη συνάντηση παρευρέθηκαν επίσης ο Πρύτανης του Πανεπιστημίου Κύπρου, Καθηγητής Τάσος Χριστοφίδης, ο Αναπληρωτής Διευθυντής του Κέντρου Αριστείας «Κοίος», Καθηγητής Χρίστος Παναγιώτου καθώς και άλλα μέλη του ακαδημαϊκού και ερευνητικού προσωπικού του «Κοίος».
Κατά τη διάρκεια της συνάντησης, συζητήθηκαν θέματα σχετικά με την πολιτική άμυνα και ασφάλεια των κρίσιμων υποδομών καθώς και ο ρόλος της έρευνας και της καινοτομίας στην αντιμετώπιση και βελτίωση των επιπτώσεων της κλιματικής αλλαγής σε τοπικό και περιφερειακό επίπεδο. Ιδιαίτερη αναφορά έγινε στα ερευνητικά προγράμματα, τις ομάδες εργασίες και δράσεις του Ευρωπαϊκού Οργανισμού Άμυνας, στα οποία το Κέντρο Αριστείας «Κοίος» και το Πανεπιστήμιο Κύπρου έχουν ενεργή συμμετοχή.
Οι παρευρισκόμενοι είχαν επίσης την ευκαιρία να ξεναγηθούν στις εγκαταστάσεις και στο εργαστήριο του Κέντρου Αριστείας «Κοίος» και να συνομιλήσουν με νέους ερευνητές για την πρωτοποριακή έρευνα και καινοτομία που επιτελείται στο Κέντρο, σε θέματα ευφυών συστημάτων κρίσιμων υποδομών, όπως είναι τα συστήματα ενέργειας, μεταφορών, υδάτινων πόρων καθώς και για συστήματα διαχείρισης έκτακτων περιστατικών. Κατά τη διάρκεια σύντομων παρουσιάσεων, οι ερευνητές του «Κοίος» έδειξαν το πώς η έρευνα και η ανάπτυξη τεχνολογιών αιχμής μπορούν να μετατρέψουν τα συστήματα κρίσιμων υποδομών σε πιο έξυπνα, αποδοτικά, πράσινα και ασφαλή, για να αντιμετωπίσουν τις επιπτώσεις της κλιματικής αλλαγής.
