Cyprus University of Technology: Cooperation Protocol with the Cyprus Ministry of Education, Culture, Youth and Sports
The Cyprus University of Technology (CUT) is creating a School of Tourism and new academic departments, as a result of the Cooperation Protocol signed with the Cyprus Ministry of Education, Culture, Youth and Sports, which provides for the integration of the Cyprus Higher Hotel Institute (HHIC) into CUT.
Rector of CUT: "Today we made a big step towards the further development of our University"
In a written message to the university community, the Rector of CUT, Professor Panayiotis Zaphiris, spοκε of "a very big step" towards the further development of the University and its interconnection with critical sectors of the national economy, with a broader positive impact on the University Education of Cyprus, which confirms, as he says, "the important role of our University as a dynamic developmental institution of the Cypriot society and a valid and reliable partner of the Cypriot State".
"We have agreed with the Government to create the new School of Tourism, which will include the Academic Department of Tourism and Hospitality Management, a new Academic Department of Management, Entrepreneurship and Digital Business and an Institute offering vocational training programmes for catering and other related professions. We have also agreed to create a new Academic Department of Maritime Studies in the Faculty of Management and Economics," Rector Zaphiris said in his message.
"For the establishment of the new School and our new Academic Departments, we must work within the framework of the institutional procedures, with seriousness and determination. We have a lot of hard work ahead of us, but we all know that at the end of the journey we will have a larger - by 500-600 new students - and a very proud University", said Professor Panayiotis Zaphiris.
Regarding the creation of the Institute, added the Rector, "the agreement provides for a three-year preparation period during which the existing Department of Hotel and Tourism Management will lead, design and coordinate a holistic educational experience at multiple levels, meeting present and future needs of the industry".
"The operation of the Institute at our University," he continued, "ensures the quality of the curricula through academic oversight by the Department. At the same time, it opens up new prospects for cooperation with the tourism industry at local and international level, while offering courses in English".
"Following recent decisions of the Senate and the Council of the University", the Rector further stated, "we have signed a Protocol of Cooperation with the Ministry of Education, Culture, Youth and Sports which provides for the inclusion of the Cyprus Higher Hotel Institute which will be upgraded as mentioned above", noted that "by its decisions, the Council of Ministers has adopted a number of our demands regarding the relevant needs in terms of academic, teaching, administrative staff, logistical infrastructure and other related issues concerning both the School of Tourism and the School of Management and Economics".
He noted that "in order to achieve these extremely important goals, we worked methodically and coherently and with absolute commitment to the overall interest of our University", adding that the contribution of the President and professors of the Department of Hotel and Tourism Management, who drafted most of their proposals and counter-proposals during the dialogue with the State, was decisive.
Professor Panayiotis Zaphiris also spoke of "key interventions" by the Director of Administration and Finance of the CUT, with positive results, at crucial junctures of the dialogue with the Ministry, adding that the Director "made great efforts to fulfill the goals we set and played a leading role in the consultations". He also described as important the support to this effort of the Dean of the Faculty of Management and Economics and other faculty members of the Faculty.
He also noted the support offered by the Vice Rectors of the University both at the beginning of the consultation with the State and during the discussions and dialogue that took place in the University's governing bodies.
Finally, the Rector expressed his sincere thanks to the Minister of Education, Culture, Youth and Sports, Mr. Prodromos Prodromou "for our creative cooperation and the trust he has shown in the Cyprus University of Technology".

Τεχνολογικό Πανεπιστήμιο Κύπρου: Πρωτοκόλλου Συνεργασίας με το Υπουργείο Παιδείας, Πολιτισμού, Αθλητισμού και Νεολαίας
Πρύτανης ΤΕΠΑΚ: «Σήμερα κάναμε ένα μεγάλο βήμα προς την περαιτέρω ανάπτυξη του Πανεπιστημίου μας»
Στη δημιουργία Σχολής Τουρισμού και νέων ακαδημαϊκών Τμημάτων, προχώρησε το Τεχνολογικό Πανεπιστήμιο Κύπρου (ΤΕΠΑΚ), ως αποτέλεσμα και του Πρωτοκόλλου Συνεργασίας που υπέγραψε σήμερα με το Υπουργείο Παιδείας, Πολιτισμού, Αθλητισμού και Νεολαίας, το οποίο προνοεί την ένταξη του Ανώτερου Ξενοδοχειακού Ινστιτούτου Κύπρου (ΑΞΙΚ) στο ΤΕΠΑΚ.
Σε γραπτό μήνυμά του προς την πανεπιστημιακή κοινότητα, ο Πρύτανης του ΤΕΠΑΚ, Καθηγητής Παναγιώτης Ζαφείρης έκανε λόγο για «ένα πολύ μεγάλο βήμα» προς την περαιτέρω ανάπτυξη τού Πανεπιστημίου και τη διασύνδεσή του με κρίσιμους τομείς της εθνικής Οικονομίας, με ευρύτερο θετικό αντίκτυπο στην Πανεπιστημιακή Εκπαίδευση της Κύπρου, γεγονός που επιβεβαιώνει, όπως αναφέρει, «το σημαντικό ρόλο του Πανεπιστημίου μας ως ένας δυναμικός αναπτυξιακός φορέας της κυπριακής κοινωνίας και ένας έγκυρος και αξιόπιστος εταίρος της κυπριακής Πολιτείας».
«Για την ίδρυση της νέας Σχολής και των νέων μας Ακαδημαϊκών Τμημάτων πρέπει να εργαστούμε στο πλαίσιο των θεσμικών διαδικασιών, με σοβαρότητα αλλά και με αποφασιστικότητα. Μας περιμένει αρκετή σκληρή δουλειά, όμως όλοι ξέρουμε ότι στο τέλος της διαδρομής θα έχουμε ένα μεγαλύτερο - κατά 500-600 νέους φοιτητές και φοιτήτριες - και πολύ περήφανο Πανεπιστήμιο», τονίζει ο Καθηγητής Παναγιώτης Ζαφείρης.
Αναφορικά με τη δημιουργία του Ινστιτούτου, πρόσθεσε ο Πρύτανης, «η συμφωνία προβλέπει μια τριετή περίοδο προετοιμασίας κατά την οποία το υφιστάμενο Τμήμα Διοίκησης Ξενοδοχείων και Τουρισμού θα ηγηθεί, σχεδιάσει και συντονίσει μια ολιστική εκπαιδευτική εμπειρία σε πολλαπλά επίπεδα, καλύπτοντας παρούσες και μελλοντικές ανάγκες του κλάδου».
«Η λειτουργία του Ινστιτούτου στο Πανεπιστήμιο μας», συνέχισε, «διασφαλίζει την ποιότητα των προγραμμάτων σπουδών μέσω της ακαδημαϊκής εποπτείας από το Τμήμα. Παράλληλα, διανοίγει νέες προοπτικές συνεργασίας με την Τουριστική Βιομηχανία σε τοπικό και διεθνές επίπεδο, ενώ δίδεται η δυνατότητα προσφοράς μαθημάτων και στην Αγγλική».
«Μετά από πρόσφατες αποφάσεις της Συγκλήτου και του Συμβουλίου του Πανεπιστημίου», ανάφερε περαιτέρω ο Πρύτανης, «έχουμε υπογράψει Πρωτόκολλο Συνεργασίας με το Υπουργείο Παιδείας, Πολιτισμού, Αθλητισμού και Νεολαίας που προνοεί την ένταξη του Ανώτερου Ξενοδοχειακού Ινστιτούτου Κύπρου το οποίο θα αναβαθμιστεί ως αναφέρω πιο πάνω», σημειώνοντας πως «με αποφάσεις του, το Υπουργικό Συμβούλιο υιοθέτησε σειρά απαιτήσεων μας αναφορικά με τις σχετικές ανάγκες σε ακαδημαϊκό, εκπαιδευτικό, διοικητικό προσωπικό, υλικοτεχνικές υποδομές και άλλα συναφή θέματα που αφορούν τόσο τη Σχολή Τουρισμού όσο και τη Σχολή Διοίκησης και Οικονομίας».
Σημείωσε πως «για να πετύχουμε αυτούς τους εξαιρετικής σημασίας στόχους, εργαστήκαμε μεθοδικά και συγκροτημένα και με απόλυτη προσήλωση στο συνολικό καλώς νοούμενο συμφέρον του Πανεπιστημίου μας», προσθέτοντας πως καθοριστική υπήρξε η συμβολή του Προέδρου και καθηγητών του Τμήματος Διοίκησης Ξενοδοχείων και Τουρισμού που συνέταξαν πλείστες των προτάσεων και αντιπροτάσεων μας κατά τη διάρκεια του διαλόγου με την Πολιτεία.
Ο Καθηγητής Παναγιώτης Ζαφείρης έκανε, επίσης, λόγο για «καίριες παρεμβάσεις» του Διευθυντή Διοίκησης και Οικονομικών του ΤΕΠΑΚ, με θετικά αποτελέσματα, σε κρίσιμες καμπές του διαλόγου με το Υπουργείο, προσθέτοντας πως ο Διευθυντής «κατέβαλε μεγάλες προσπάθειες για την εκπλήρωση των στόχων που θέσαμε και διαδραμάτισε πρωταγωνιστικό ρόλο στις διαβουλεύσεις». Χαρακτήρισε, επίσης, σημαντική τη στήριξη προς την προσπάθεια αυτή του Κοσμήτορα της Σχολής Διοίκησης και Οικονομίας και άλλων καθηγητών της Σχολής.
Επισήμανε, επίσης, την υποστήριξη που προσέφεραν οι Αντιπρυτάνεις του Πανεπιστημίου τόσο κατά την έναρξη της διαβούλευσης με την Πολιτεία όσο και κατά τις συζητήσεις και το διάλογο που έγινε στα Σώματα του Πανεπιστημίου.
Καταλήγοντας, ο Πρύτανης εξέφρασε τις θερμές του ευχαριστίες στον Υπουργό Παιδείας, Πολιτισμού, Αθλητισμού και Νεολαίας κ. Πρόδρομο Προδρόμου «για τη δημιουργική μας συνεργασία και την εμπιστοσύνη που επιδεικνύει στο Τεχνολογικό Πανεπιστήμιο Κύπρου».
