University of Cyprus: Enhancing the attractiveness of coasts and coastal regions. The new SocioCoast research project is coordinated by the University of Cyprus
The University of Cyprus coordinates another cooperation programme INTERREG V-A Greece-Cyprus 2014-2020, with the aim of enhancing the attractiveness of coasts and coastal regions through more complete information about the regions and the possibility of contributing to the identification and solution of problems.
The full title of the project is: “Enhance promotion of coasts and coastal regions and problem reporting through crowd sourcing activities” (SocioCoast).
The first goal of SocioCoast is to improve the access and the direct contribution of residents and visitors to Communication Technology (ICT) applications that improve attractiveness as well as increase the use of ICT by visitors to implement crowdfunding initiatives to identify problems and strengthen the local economy in the tourism sector. The second objective of the project is to enhance the use of ICT for the management of marine and coastal areas by interested stakeholders.
The SocioCoast project, with a duration of two years, is implemented in the framework of a collaboration between 5 organizations from Cyprus and Greece: University of Cyprus, Institute of Technology and Research, Hellenic Society for Nature Protection, Cyprus Association for the Protection of the Marine Environment, Hellenic Center for Marine Research. The project started in May 2021, coordinated by the Department of Informatics of the University of Cyprus and a total budget of € 686,419.85, of which € 200,040.00 correspond to the budget of the University of Cyprus.
The project is funded by the European Regional Development Fund under INTERREG V-A Greece-Cyprus 2014-2020. The team of the University of Cyprus in the SocioCoast project is led by Associate Professor Georgia (Zeta) Kapitsaki from the Research Engineering Software and Internet Technologies Laboratory (SEIT). The contribution of the University of Cyprus concerns the coordination of the project, the investigation and creation of a knowledge platform related to coastal biodiversity data and the implementation and promotion of corresponding applications.

Πανεπιστήμιο Κύπρου: Ενίσχυση της ελκυστικότητας των παράλιων και παράκτιων περιοχών. Το νέο ερευνητικό έργο SocioCoast συντονίζει το Πανεπιστήμιο Κύπρου
Ένα ακόμα πρόγραμμα συνεργασία INTERREG V-A Ελλάδα-Κύπρος 2014-2020 συντονίζει το Πανεπιστήμιο Κύπρου με στόχο την ενίσχυση της ελκυστικότητας των παράλιων και παράκτιων περιοχών μέσω πληρέστερης ενημέρωσης για τις περιοχές και δυνατότητα συνεισφοράς στον εντοπισμό και στην επίλυση προβλημάτων. Ο πλήρης τίτλος του έργου είναι «Ενίσχυση της Προβολής Παραλιών και Παράκτιων Περιοχών και Αναφορών Προβλημάτων με Πληθοπορισμό» (SocioCoast).
Πρώτος στόχος του SocioCoast είναι η βελτίωση της πρόσβασης και άμεσης συνεισφοράς των κατοίκων και των επισκεπτών σε εφαρμογές Τεχνολογιών Πληροφορικής και Επικοινωνιών (ΤΠΕ) που βελτιώνουν την ελκυστικότητα καθώς και η αύξηση της χρήσης των ΤΠΕ από επισκέπτες για την εφαρμογή πρωτοβουλιών πληθοπορισμού, για τον εντοπισμό προβλημάτων και την ενίσχυση της τοπικής οικονομίας στον κλάδο του τουρισμού. Ο δεύτερος στόχος του έργου είναι η ενίσχυση της χρήσης των ΤΠΕ για τη διαχείριση προβλημάτων των θαλάσσιων και παράκτιων περιοχών από ενδιαφερόμενα μέρη.
Το πρόγραμμα SocioCoast, με διάρκεια δυο χρόνια, υλοποιείται στο πλαίσιο μιας συνεργασίες μεταξύ 5 οργανισμών από την Κύπρο και την Ελλάδα: Πανεπιστήμιο Κύπρου, ίδρυμα Τεχνολογίας και Έρευνας, Ελληνική Εταιρία Προστασίας της Φύσης, Κυπριακή Ένωση Προστασίας Θαλάσσιου Περιβάλλοντος, Ελληνικό Κέντρο Θαλασσίων Ερευνών. Το έργο ξεκίνησε τον Μάιο του 2021, με συντονιστή το Τμήμα Πληροφορικής του Πανεπιστημίου Κύπρου και συνολικό προϋπολογισμό €686.419,85, από τα οποία €200.040.00 αντιστοιχούν στον προϋπολογισμό του Πανεπιστημίου Κύπρου.
Το έργο χρηματοδοτείται από το Ευρωπαϊκό Ταμείο Περιφερειακής ανάπτυξης στο πλαίσιο του INTERREG V-A Ελλάδα-Κύπρος 2014-2020. Η ομάδα του Πανεπιστημίου Κύπρου στο έργο SocioCoast καθοδηγείται από την Αναπληρώτρια Καθηγήτρια Γεωργία (Ζέτα) Καπιτσάκη από το Ερευνητικού Εργαστήριο Software Engineering and Internet Technologies Laboratory (SEIT). Η συμβολή του Πανεπιστημίου Κύπρου αφορά στον συντονισμό του έργου και στη διερεύνηση και δημιουργία μιας πλατφόρμας γνώσης σχετικά με δεδομένα βιοποικιλότητας ακτών και στην υλοποίηση και προώθηση αντίστοιχων εφαρμογών.
