The Cyprus University of Technology (CUT): The exhibition Ledra Palace Dancing on the Line

The Cyprus University of Technology supports the exhibition Ledra Palace Dancing on the Line, organised by the Leventis Municipal Museum of Nicosia and the CYENS Centre of Excellence.

The University is a partner of CYENS and the Ledra Palace Project is coordinated by Dr. Theopisti Stylianou-Lambert, associate professor at the Department of Multimedia and Graphic Arts and the founder and coordinator of its Visual Sociology and Museum Studies Lab.

Through the exhibition in the exhibition space of the Leventi Municipal Museum of Nicosia, which is based on thorough archival research and testimonies of people who experienced the hotel from its inception, in 1949, until today, the organizers seek to achieve two goals. The first is to reveal the turbulent modern history of Cyprus, to "revive" the history of Ledra Palace in a more polyphonic and multidimensional way and to motivate us to discuss the recent history of the island. The second goal is to honor Nicosia but also to highlight modernity in Cyprus. The early history of Ledra Palace unfolds anothernarrative: that of modernism and vibrant cosmopolitan social life. Oral testimonies, combined with personal photographs and objects, are at the forefront of this process.

Emerging technologies play an important role in the exhibition, as well as original applications developed by the CYENS Centre of Excellence, reviving the history of a hotel that is no longer easily accessible. With the help of technology, the older ones will remember and the younger ones will learn what the luxurious Ledra Palace was like more than 70 years ago, traveling in a line of time that starts from the creation of Ledra Palace and reaches today.

It is noted that the exhibition could not be completed without the kind provision of photographs, objects and various documentary material from institutions, organizations, agencies and private collectors, but also by those who worked and lived in Ledra Palace.

The exhibition was curated by Loukia Loizou Hadjigavriel, Antigone Heraclidou and Theopisti Stylianou-Lambert, while the general coordination of the exhibitions was organised by the director of the Leventis Municipal Museum of Nicosia, Demetra Theodotou Anagnostopoulou, and the curator Maria Patsalosavvi.

The exhibition is accompanied by a rich edition of essays and photographic material, the writing of which was contributed by academics and researchers, who approach Ledra Palace from various perspectives. During the exhibition, physical and online tours, presentations and educational programmes will take place.
