Public consultation launched on micro-credentials for lifelong learning and employability

The European Commission launched a 12-week long public consultation on a European approach to micro-credentials for lifelong learning and employability.

The public consultation seeks to collect ideas for the development of a common definition for micro-credentials, European Union (EU) standards for their quality and transparency and the next steps to be taken at the institutional, national and EU levels.

The public consultation will be open until 13 July 2021 at 23:59 Central European Summer Time (CEST).

This joint initiative led by European Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth, Mariya Gabriel, and for Jobs and Social Rights, Nicolas Schmit, will support the quality, transparency and uptake of short learning courses leading to micro-credentials.

Establishing a European approach to micro-credentials will help to substantially widen learning opportunities and to make lifelong learning a reality across the EU.

Within Europe, a growing number of citizens need to update their knowledge, skills and competences to fill gaps between their formal education and the needs of a constantly evolving society and labour market.

Short learning courses offered by diverse public and private stakeholders are developing rapidly across Europe in response to the need for more flexible, learner-centred forms of education and training.

The potential role of and interest in micro-credentials that certify the outcomes of these short learning experiences is thus increasing.

Take part in the public consultation and have your say today!

The consultation will be available in all EU official languages from 30 April 2021.
