Cyprus Institute webinar: CYSTEM ERA CHAIR PROJECT RESULTS

The “Solar Thermal Energy Chair for the Eastern Mediterranean (CySTEM – ERA Chair)”, the EU-funded project that aims at consolidating and upgrading the already substantial activities of the Cyprus Institute (CyI) in the field of Solar Energy, principally solar-thermal and related activities, is coming to an end. On 14 December 2020, the CyI organised a webinar to present its scientific outcomes and the prospects it generated for the future.

The project was funded the European Union’s Horizon 2020 European Research Area (ERA) Chair programme. It is a capability development program, designed to attract and install at CyI a cluster of outstanding researchers, led by a professor of international stature, to maximally utilize and upgrade the existing facilities of the Institute, and pursue a program of excellence in Cyprus with local and regional focus in the region of Eastern Mediterranean and Middle East (EMME).

The principal focus of the project was on Concentrated Solar Thermal (CST) technologies for electricity production, desalination, air conditioning and heating, either in isolation or in multi-generation modes. Its relevance grew in importance as the need for decarbonization has evolved as one of the principal initiatives in Eu and worldwide.

At the webinar, the different achievements of CySTEM ERA Chair project will be presented and discussed, paying particular attention to the positive impacts that it has achieved at CyI both at the institutional and scientific levels, in relation to:

  • The enhancement of experimental capabilities in the CSP domain and the expansion of those capabilities to other renewable energy, energy storage and smart-grid technologies.
  • The consolidation of an energy modelling unit within the Solar Energy and Desalination Group of the Energy Division of CyI, and the associated development of far reaching initiatives of open source modelling tools to facilitate the modelling, analysis, design and optimization of CST components and systems.
  • The contribution to the establishment within the Energy Division of the Energy Policy and Analysis Group, and to the analysis and studies this group is undertaking in relation to the role of renewable energy sources in the Energy Transition, at large, and particularly in Cyprus.
