Michel Barnier, chief EU negotiator, held a press conference on Friday, following the latest round of negotiations on the future UK-EU relationship.
He stressed that while many obstacles to a full trade deal still exist, the negotiators "were able to make progress on technical issues" in several areas, including UK participation in Union programmes and energy cooperation. This, as highlighted by Barnier, will be useful when consolidating the final text of the agreement, provided progress is made on its fundamental elements.
This was the last of the additional rounds of negotiations agreed by UK and EU leaders during a high-level meeting in mid-June, although UKRO understands that two more rounds are now expected to take place in September, paving way to a potential agreement in the autumn.
