Project Results: Online Calculator Contributing to Green Deal Objectives

The Horizon 2020-funded project EUCalc has developed an online calculator to help businesses and individuals identify solutions and actions that contribute to the EU Green Deal objectives.

Project Objective

The overall aim of the EUCalc project, funded under topic SC5-06-2016-2017 - Pathways towards the decarbonisation and resilience of the European economy in the timeframe 2030-2050 and beyond, was to develop an 'open source framework' for politicians, innovators and investors assess the so-called 'trade-offs' and synergies of various European decarbonisation pathways. The tool would then allow these 'decision-makers' to identify the best set of 'actions' to take for their area.

Result

Designed in collaboration with researchers and other actors, the framework is now accessible through an online tool called the Transition Pathways Explorer, allowing anyone to run their own emission scenarios in real-time, and directly visualise how compliant these are with the European mitigation targets.

The explorer first establishes whether users want to limit temperature rise to 1.5 or 2°C by 2050, and whether they feel Europe’s share of the burden should be calculated on a per capita or capability basis. Depending upon the approach, users can then access a number of interactive charts showcasing efforts to be displayed in 60 sectors of action. They can find out about the global benefit of actions taken in Europe and check scenarios.

The explorer uses state-of-the-art global warming potential (GWP) calculations to consider emissions of different gases and convert them into CO2 equivalents in terms of impact on climate.

In developing the explorer, the EUCalc project, which has 13 partners across ten countries, will contribute to the EU's commitment to become climate neutral by 2050, an objective outlined in the EU Green Deal, launched in December 2019. It will also support organisations and individuals in identifying actions to meet the goals of the so-called Paris Agreement, a commitment to keep global warming below 2°C.

EUCalc will also seek to develop a “My Europe 2050” education tool and a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) which will be made available in due course.
