Future and emerging technologies in the EIC Pathfinder: how to turn crazy scientific research into innovative technologies and products

Now, the FET programme will be integrated into the new European Innovation Council and will help research to become industrial applications and systems more quickly.

For 30 years, the EU’s Future and Emerging Technologies (FET) programme encouraged researchers from different disciplines to work together to convert crazy scientific ideas into proofs of concept, laying the foundations for radically new technologies. Now, the FET programme will be integrated into the new European Innovation Council and will help research to become industrial applications and systems more quickly.

At the moment, we are talking a lot about Horizon Europe, the Commission’s next programme for research and innovation, and it’s easy to forget that Horizon 2020 is not yet over. In the last two years of Horizon 2020, for example, we are still spending over € 1 billion on ground-breaking technology research in Future and Emerging Technologies programme calls (calls for FET Open and FET Proactive are already open). Many of these projects will go on well into the next decade, so please keep your great ideas coming!

At the same time, Horizon Europe is taking shape. The FET Open and FET Proactive schemes will become part of the new European Innovation Council (EIC). They will be at the heart of the new EIC Pathfinder, a science-driven exploration engine for radically new technologies. The EIC Pathfinder will be a laboratory for creating new technology-driven visions for the future where entirely new markets can develop. It will assess new challenges and missions, beginning with the early high-risk stages, and gradually crystallise research priorities and catalyse a new European research and innovation dynamic around them.

For 30 years, FET has spearheaded the exploration of radically new technologies, many of them in the area of ICT (such as nano-opto-mechanical systems, artificial intelligence, and quantum computing), but also in smart systems (bio-inspired robotics, internet-of-things), the life sciences (body on chip), energy (artificial photosynthesis), and the environment (living architecture). Now, the EIC will provide a new context for FET research with new opportunities to enhance its impact, in two main ways:

• First, the EIC is going to increase the visibility of results from FET research. This is important, because innovative companies are continuously looking for new, inspiring ideas – exactly the kind of ideas that FET projects provide. The EIC, by bringing together the worlds of research and innovation under a single programme, will link these ideas more directly with the innovators that could bring them to the market.
• Second, turning good research into innovation requires active intervention. Europe needs new instruments to bring promising technologies swiftly to a level of maturity where investors and markets can pick them up. The ‘transition to innovation activities’ under the EIC Pathfinder as well as the use of Programme Managers will serve this purpose, creating a an active connection to the innovation, market creation and scale-up mechanisms that are developed through the downstream-oriented part of the EIC, the Accelerator programme.

Μελλοντικές και αναδυόμενες τεχνολογίες στο EIC Pathfinder: πώς να μετατρέψετε την τρελή επιστημονική έρευνα σε καινοτόμες τεχνολογίες και προϊόντα

Για 30 χρόνια, το πρόγραμμα της ΕΕ για το μέλλον και τις αναδυόμενες τεχνολογίες (FET) ενθάρρυνε τους ερευνητές από διαφορετικούς κλάδους να συνεργαστούν για να μετατρέψουν τις τρελές επιστημονικές τους ιδέες σε αποδείξεις ορθότητας της ιδέας (“proof of concept”), θέτοντας τα θεμέλια για ριζικά νέες τεχνολογίες. Τώρα, το πρόγραμμα FET θα ενσωματωθεί στο νέο Ευρωπαϊκό Συμβούλιο Καινοτομίας (European Innovation Council) και θα βοηθήσει την έρευνα να δημιουργήσει πιο γρήγορα βιομηχανικές εφαρμογές και συστήματα.

Επί του παρόντος, αναφερόμαστε συχνά στο Πρόγραμμα  «Ορίζοντας Ευρώπη», το επόμενο πρόγραμμα της Επιτροπής για την έρευνα και την καινοτομία, και εύκολα ξεχνάμε το πρόγραμμα «Ορίζοντας 2020» που δεν έχει ακόμη τελειώσει. Κατά τα τελευταία δύο έτη του προγράμματος «Ορίζοντας 2020», για παράδειγμα, εξακολουθούμε να δαπανούμε πάνω από 1 δισ. ευρώ για την πρωτοποριακή τεχνολογική έρευνα στις προσκλήσεις του προγράμματος Future and Emerging Technologies (οι αιτήσεις για το πρόγραμμα  FET και FET Proactive έχουν ήδη ανοίξει). Πολλά από αυτά τα έργα θα συνεχιστούν και στην επόμενη δεκαετία, οπότε παρακαλώ «συνεχίσεστε να μας φέρνετε τις μεγάλες ιδέες»!

Ταυτόχρονα, το Horizon Europe διαμορφώνεται. Τα προγράμματα FET Open και FET Proactive θα ενταχθούν στο νέο Ευρωπαϊκό Συμβούλιο Καινοτομίας (EIC). Θα βρίσκονται στο επίκεντρο του νέου EIC Pathfinder, μιας επιστημονικά κατευθυνόμενης μηχανής εξερεύνησης για ριζικά νέες τεχνολογίες. Το EIC Pathfinder θα είναι ένα εργαστήριο για τη δημιουργία νέων τεχνολογικών οραμάτων για το μέλλον, όπου θα μπορούν να αναπτύξουν εντελώς νέες αγορές. Θα αξιολογήσει τις νέες προκλήσεις και αποστολές, ξεκινώντας από τα αρχικά στάδια υψηλού κινδύνου, και σταδιακά θα αποκρυσταλλώσει τις ερευνητικές προτεραιότητες και θα αποτελέσει τον καταλύτη για μια νέα ευρωπαϊκή δυναμική έρευνας και καινοτομίας γύρω από αυτές.

Για 30 χρόνια, το FET πρωτοστάτησε στην εξερεύνηση ριζικά νέων τεχνολογιών, πολλές από τις οποίες στον τομέα των ICT (όπως τα νανοοπτομηχανικά συστήματα, τεχνητή νοημοσύνη και κβαντική υπολογιστική), αλλά και σε έξυπνα συστήματα (βιοεμπνευσμένη ρομποτική, το internet-of-things), τις βιοεπιστήμες (σώμα σε τσιπ), την ενέργεια (τεχνητή φωτοσύνθεση) και το περιβάλλον (ζωντανή αρχιτεκτονική). Τώρα, το Ευρωπαϊκό Συμβούλιο Καινοτομίας (EIC)θα παράσχει ένα νέο πλαίσιο για την έρευνα FET με νέες ευκαιρίες για την ενίσχυση της επιρροής του με δύο βασικούς τρόπους:

• Πρώτον, το EIC θα αυξήσει την προβολή των αποτελεσμάτων από την έρευνα FET. Αυτό είναι σημαντικό, επειδή οι καινοτόμες εταιρείες αναζητούν συνεχώς νέες, εμπνευσμένες ιδέες - ακριβώς το είδος των ιδεών που παρέχουν τα προγράμματα FET. Το EIC, συνδυάζοντας τον κόσμο της έρευνας και της καινοτομίας σε ένα ενιαίο πρόγραμμα, θα συνδέσει αυτές τις ιδέες πιο άμεσα με τους πρωτοπόρους που θα μπορούσαν να τους φέρουν στην αγορά.
• Δεύτερον, η μετατροπή της καλής έρευνας σε καινοτομία απαιτεί ενεργή παρέμβαση. Η Ευρώπη χρειάζεται νέα μέσα για να φέρει σύντομα τις ελπιδοφόρες τεχνολογίες σε επίπεδο ωριμότητας, όπου οι επενδυτές και οι αγορές μπορούν να τις παραλάβουν. Η «μετάβαση στις δραστηριότητες καινοτομίας» στο πλαίσιο του EIC Pathfinder, καθώς και η χρήση των διαχειριστών προγραμμάτων θα εξυπηρετήσουν το σκοπό αυτό, δημιουργώντας μια ενεργό σύνδεση με τους μηχανισμούς καινοτομίας, δημιουργίας αγοράς και αναβάθμισης των μηχανισμών που αναπτύσσονται από ένα μέρος του προγράμματος EIC, το πρόγραμμα επιτάχυνσης.
